If you’re committed to getting BIG, by now you will have heard about Cardarine – or GW-501516 – although the latter is a lot less rememberable.
However, the benefits of the popular GW-XT SARM are better known. In bodybuilding circles, users turn to Cardarine supplements for a metabolism boost, increased fat burn and muscle growth.
But is the popular GW-XT SARM all it’s made out to be?
We dig a little deeper into this popular bodybuilding drug, covering Cardarine benefits, how it works and potential Cardarine side effects.
Now let’s jump right in.
What is Cardarine?
Cardarine is a peroxisome proliferator-activator-receptor delta agonist (PPARδ) used as a potential treatment of dyslipidemia – which often has a large impact on endurance and energy levels.
Often referred to as a research chemical, a Cardarine supplement (also known as GW-501516, Endurobol or GW-XT SARM) is a popular go-to for eager bodybuilders.
GW-XT SARM has been around for some time now, as a part of a collection of selective androgen receptor modulators (SARMs) used for muscle growth. Although, some prefer to consider Cardarine as a PPARδ agonist drug, rather than a SARM.
Many of its users pre Cardarine supplement report a lack of endurance in their workouts, as well as low energy and relatively small muscle gains. However, it’s worth noting that GW-501516 is currently banned from sports and is considered a dangerous drug worth avoiding.
How does a Cardarine supplement work?
GW-XT SARM works by activating tissue hormone receptors – selectively opting for tissues so that androgens (predominantly testosterone) can easily focus on these tissue receptors. When this process happens, users can experience a huge amount of muscle growth and even bone density benefits.
Since a GW-XT SARM is tissue-selective, it has been said that the Cardarine side effects are far milder than typical anabolic steroids used for bodybuilding.
Cardarine supplements were created to treat symptoms od Dyslipidemia – which is characterized as having either too high or too low levels of lipids in the blood.
Is GW-XT SARM legal?
While a Cardarine supplement may be legal to use, it is currently considered a research chemical that is not fit for human consumption.
Currently, GW-501516 is meant to be used for research purposes only.

PPARδ agonist drugs work by modulating gene expressions for the treatment of impaired lipid metabolism. A Cardarine supplement works by increasing the expression of genes responsible for stimulating fast lipid metabolism.
When the processes are improved, you can see a boost in energy levels and even fat loss. The target organ for a GW-XT SARM is the skeletal muscles, with activation of the PPARδ pathway inducing the formation of type 1 muscle fibers.
Typically, this type of muscle fibers is achieved through rigorous training. Therefore, adding a GW-XT SARM into your routine could potentially boost muscle growth.
Other Cardarine benefits include:
- Enhanced endurance and stamina
- Increased fat burn
- More energy
- Reduced risk of arteriosclerosis
- Promotes muscle fiber formation
- No interference with hormonal processes
Other Cardarine benefits:
During early animal studies, researchers found that GW-501516 improved blood circulation in the brain, reducing oxidative stress. However, while GW-501516 showed some anti-inflammatory properties on rat brain cells, it also increased IL-6, which can cause brain cell damage.
Furthermore, GW-501516 has been reviewed for fat burning abilities. In one (very small) study, 13 men with high belly fat and bad cholesterol levels showed decreased triglycerides, fatty acids and VLDL proteins.
Muscle growth and stamina
In terms of GW-XT SARM muscle-building abilities, one study (in mice) has shown the activation of PPAR-delta via a Cardarine supplement drove the development of muscle fibers – also improving endurance.
Alongside helping you get stacked, GW-501516 has been shown to improve blood flow and repair wounds.
In relation to bodybuilding and rigorous exercise, there is potential for this untested (on humans) drug to help you recover faster.
Cardarine side effects
We’re not going to dumb down the potential side effects of Cardarine (GW-501516) since studies have shown some serious risks.
Since Cardarine was first developed to benefit the heart, blood vessels and diabetes, using GW-501516 for muscle growth could have devastating repercussions. During studies, Phase II quickly came to halt after causing cancers in animals.
Does that really sound like something you want to be putting into your body? We think not.
Although there is plenty of room for further research in terms of Cardarine side effects in humans – I think we’d all prefer that GW-XT SARM remained banned and away from the bodybuilding community.
Although the activation of PPAR-delta (associated with increased energy, fat burn, muscle growth and decreased lipids in the blood) seems like a Cardarine benefit to shout about – the potential for cancer makes its muscle-building abilities obsolete.
Alongside cancer-causing effects, Cardarine side effects also include the potential to impair fetal development, damage to the liver and even brain damage.
I’m not so sure those gains are quite worth the risk.
Of course, some will disagree with the potential Cardarine side effects – since they haven’t been proven in people. However, this is due to its effects on animals alone causing human trials to have never been justified.
Further studies have shown that Cardarine benefits can also include decreasing triglycerides and lipoproteins, regulation of fat storage and breakdown of dietary fats and even improvements in hematopoietic stem cell functions.
GW-XT SARM dosage
With GW-501516 unapproved for human consumption, in bodybuilding circles, the correct dosage can be a somewhat grey area.

However, many users of GW-XT SARM opt for a dose between 2.5 and 10mg per day, for a cycle of around 12 weeks. Since Cardarine has been associated with cancer risks and remains unapproved, there is no dosage that is considered safe.
Cardarine increased cell death in liver cells and caused liver damage in some mice with liver disease – so if I were you, I’d steer well clear.
Can GW-XT SARM benefit bodybuilders?
When used in conjunction with a tough bodybuilding regime, the benefits of a Cardarine supplement can be amplified.
In order to hit your muscle goals, it’s important to pair a (legal, safe alternative) SARM with correct calorie intake, macronutrient intake, meal frequency and a solid workout.
Is GW-501516 worth it?
With the potential to cause cancer, we can say without a doubt that these Cardarine side effects aren’t worth the risk.
While some users of GW-XT SARM report increased muscle gain and enhanced fat loss, there must be a better way to smash your goals?
Of course, there is.
